This is a person, who is an expert on food, nutrition and diets, gives advice on how to eat well and can advise on what foods and drinks are best to have, according to the type of treatment being given.

Digestion is the process by which food is broken down so that it can be absorbed, used or excreted by the body.

This is parts of the body including the stomach, whose job or function, is to digest food and absorb water.


Disease

This is an abnormal condition of the body, which means it does not function or work as it should. There will usually be very clear symptoms or signs, to show that a person has a disease. If a person has a disease, they are said to be infected or have an infection. Certain diseases can cause a great deal of discomfort, distress or pain and may even be fatal, cause death.

A disorder is where part of the body is not working or functioning as it should.


DNA

DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) is the substance in the cells of the body that carries the genetic information, which every cell needs to grow and develop properly. Cancer occurs, where something abnormal happens in the DNA. DNA passes on genetic information from one generation to the next.


Doctors

Doctors are medically qualified people, who work in the wards of hospitals or in the community, in surgeries or medical practices. In hospital, they are often senior house officers or registrars, who work under a consultant, to provide medical care during a person's stay in hospital.


Domestics

Domestics are people employed by hospitals to clean the wards or give out meals and drinks.


Donor

A person who donates, gives or allows one of their organs to be transplanted for the benefit of another.


Dose

This is the amount of a drug or treatment, which a doctor decides should be given to a patient at any one time.

Drip

Drip or Intravenous infusion is a way in which fluid is given through a needle put into a vein, usually in the arm. This may be done using a cannula, where a bag of fluid is connected to plastic tubing and the needle.


Drug

A substance which is used as a medicine. When a new drug has been developed by a pharmaceutical company, it can not be used, prescribed by a doctor, until the authorities in the UK have passed it for marketing in this country. For this to happen officials and experts have to be satisfied that the drug is safe and effective. Sometimes this is referred to as marketing authorisation, or being licensed or approved or registered. It then has to be launched in the UK before doctors can prescribe them for patients. The pharmaceutical company decides when they want to launch a licensed, approved or registered drug.


Dysfunctional

Dysfunctional means something is not working or functioning properly.
