Ward

This is an area of the hospital, where people with similar needs, are cared for.


Warfarin

Warfarin is a drug that prevents the blood from clotting. Drugs which prevent the blood from clotting are known as anticoagulants.


Wart

This is a raised growth found on the surface of the skin or another organ.


Waste Products

Waste Products are made or produced, when the body has taken all the goodness it needs from the food and drink which we have. The main waste products are urine and faeces.


Watchful Waiting

Watchful Waiting is the process of closely monitoring or watching a patient's condition. At the same time, treatment is delayed until symptoms appear or change. This process is also known as active surveillance, expectant management or observation.

Wedge Resection

Wedge Resection is an operation in which a v-shaped, wedge of tissue, such as part of an organ, is removed. A wedge resection can be used to remove a tumour and a small amount of surrounding tissue.


White Blood Cells

White Blood Cells or WBC are one of the three types of blood cells made by the bone marrow. They produce antibodies to fight infection, by identifying and killing off harmful bacteria and viruses. White blood cells do not contain haemoglobin. They include lymphocytes, eosinophils, macrophages, neutrophils and mast cells


Windpipe

This is the airway that runs from the larynx or voice-box to the bronchi (the large airways leading to the lungs).


Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome

Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome or Aldrich Syndrome is an inherited disorder of the immune system. It usually occurs in young boys. It causes eczema, which is a skin inflammation, a decrease in the number of platelets and frequent bacterial infections. Patients with Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome have an increased risk of developing leukaemia and lymphoma.


Wound

A wound is a break or tear in the skin or other tissue, which is caused by a surgical incision or cut, made in an operation or by an injury.


Wound Drain

Wound Drain or Drain or Drainage Tubes are put in place by a surgeon to drain off fluid that collects at the site of an operation. The tube comes out close to the wound and sometimes has a gentle suction to drain the fluids from around the wound.
